FMI Family Meals Month™

Connecting Retailers with Resources

Common Threads is pleased to be a community collaborator for the FMI Foundation’s National Family Meals Month™ this September. Common Threads’ mission, to bring health and wellness to children, families and communities through cooking and nutrition education, aligns beautifully with the goals of National Family Meals Month™ to encourage families to enjoy one more meal at home each week.

Common Threads will celebrate National Family Meals Month™ by inspiring more families to share more meals together around the dinner table and create a warm, loving atmosphere in the home centered on healthy food.

Common Threads has a number of resources that food retailers can share with their customers. Please take a moment to review the resources below to see how you can join us in celebrating National Family Meals Month™!

Grocery Store Tours

During our Grocery Store Tours, a Common Threads Chef Instructor leads a 2-hour guided tour of a local grocery store, providing up to 20 participants with tips and tricks for making healthy, budget-conscious decisions when going food shopping for their families.

Participants will learn about portion size, reading nutrition labels and food packaging, proper food storage and more to help them recognize nutritional value and economically purchase the freshest, healthiest fruits and vegetables for their families. In addition to a Chef Instructor to lead the tour, Common Threads will provide interactive games and activities to help families identify and select healthy ingredients for family meals.

If you are interested in hosting a Grocery Store Tour, please contact [email protected]. To learn more about the program, download a more in-depth overview here.

Cooking for Life Handbook

The Cooking for Life Handbook provides families with nutrition tips, fun activities for kids and eight weeks of simple, healthy recipes that can be cooked on a SNAP-friendly budget. Several pages of the CFL Handbook contain useful grocery shopping tips, such as a guide to choosing produce, how to read a food label, a list of important helper ingredients to always keep in your pantry, a $10 shopping challenge and more.

Retailers can share these resources with their shoppers to promote healthy family meals and habits online via their website or social media channels, or through in-store distribution.

Common Bytes

Common Bytes is our online nutrition education platform that features interactive games, videos and recipe journeys to engage children around nutrition and healthy eating in a fun way. Common Bytes features a growing library of more than 100 healthy recipes with simple, affordable ingredients that represent food cultures from around the globe.

Retailers can engage families by pairing a healthy recipe from Common Bytes with a featured ingredient or product of their choice. This can be as simple as placing print-outs of a salad recipe near the fresh produce used in the meal, or a healthy pizza recipe adjacent to the tomato sauce on the shelf.

Try some of our family favorites like Baked Fish Tacos, Thai Coconut Chicken Curry, Mango Crisp Crumble and Roasted Pineapple. Print these out for the produce aisle of your store, or choose your own favorites by accessing the full Common Bytes recipe library at www.commonbytes.org
